"…it is in the sharing of great truths that the consciousness of humanity will attain new heights." Medicine Cards.
"We live today in a time of confusion and disintegration. Everything is in the melting pot. As is usual in such circumstances, unconscious contents thrust forward to the very borders of consciousness for the purpose of compensating the crisis in which it finds itself. It is therefore well worth our while to examine all such borderline phenomena with the greatest care, however obscure they seem, with a view to discovering the seeds of new and potential orders."
C.G.Jung, The Psychology of the Transference, p. 160.
I love that!
"… the seeds of new and potential orders."
Are these "new" "orders" connected to the New World Order? What is Order, when seen from the Hermetic perspective as in:
"Order is the vehicle of the world itself,
and the whole consists of order." Asclepius [39]
Can we find these "new seeds" by searching the Global Brain phenomenon of the World Wide Web?
What is the "melting pot" if not the alchemical vessel.
How do we deal with the "confusion and disintegration" of the Old Order – and assist the "new seeds" to germinate?
Many questions, many answers, an enrichment of the human condition, especially with Pluto in Sagittarius.
Divination is a useful function, when removed from asking mundane questions about money, power and position etc. I respect the Medicine cards of Jamie Sams, and this extremely accurate answer came out recently, when enquiring on the nature of my work:
"…you may wish to share your knowledge by writing or lecturing on information that will help others better understand their uniqueness or path in life. It is in the sharing of great truths that the consciousness of humanity will attain new heights." Wolf, pp. 97-98, J. Sams. Medicine Cards.
I was delighted to receive some email from complete strangers, soon to be friends, who stumbled onto the Lux Lapis Web Page – a mere drop in the cyber ocean.
Have just launched a small, experimental TAROT section - more in the nature of a Notebook – as I am still reluctant to launch the bulk of my Tarot researches in the hope that it will mature into a book. [Heard that one before?] The Tarot on the Web has reached industrial proportions – and I would say about 95% of it is worthless. But to clear the debris in my own mind – the Tarot Newsletter [ the first will be out soon] – will be a form of online musing about problems. Everything will be archived at the Tarot site. And here it is:

You would be forgiven if you did not know that ancient Egypt was on the African continent, for to all intents and purposes, this is a fact that is not widely disseminated in Europe. Nor, it seems, are European Historians keen to press the point! Enter right – Martin Bernal, with his book ‘Black Athena’. Then the "you-know-what" really hits the fan. The controversy rages on – and the Web well represents the pro’s and cons. This is the book – and this is one site from which to launch your education on the subject….

ART AND IMAGES
As part of the conversion of my archives - I have been trying to replace old, black and white xeroxes with full colour images gathered from the Web. Also, the expense of printing from slides, or even colour xeroxing - has driven me to resort to a digital alternative to storing images.
While searching for images on VENUS - for that Tarot Department I came across:
where I found the:
THE NATIONAL GALLERY VENUS AND CUPID:
and other Cranch paintings
gives one an idea of what can be achieved on a humble scale.
More Ambitious is the:
UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA CLASSICAL MYTHS.
THE VENUS SECTION - has both IMAGES AND TEXTS:
And look at the GIORGIONE VENUS ASLEEP:
There is an absolutely stunning collection of Illuminated Manuscripts from an online Exhibition at The Bibliothèque Nationale de France - The Age of King Charles V (1338-1380) 1,000 Illuminations from the Department of Manuscripts.
The Most Exquisite are the MSS - Bartholomaeus Anglicus (Bartholomew the Englishman), On the Properties of Things - where delicious images include Phoenix, Eagle, Peacock etc.
ANCIENT ASTROLOGY
In the neighborhoood, where I lived as a child, there were various religious sharks who preyed on impressionable adolescents. Especially in cultural backwaters such as Port Elizabeth. I was told, in very clear terms that Astrology was the work of the Devil. A fact, which at the age of 14 years old, or so, I refused point blank to believe! In my case their evangelical efforts failed. Now 40 years later, armed with a scrap of maturity I view the 4,000 year old tapestry of Astrological History, with its incredible richness with some awe. And it is this totality that must, according to those fundamentalists, be consigned to the trashcan of history as "..the work of the Devil.." What unutterable ignorance and bigotry! And to think they they had to power to censor books, destoy human lives, to torture people and to burn them at the stake. Thank goodness such days are over, but there are more subtle means of control.
In this manner, we can see how religion, in some of its lowest manifestations, must part company with science.
In particular, the above diatribe, has been inspired by my reading of: Langdon, S. Tammuz and Ishtar, A Monograph upon Babylonian Religion and Theology, Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1914. This book has a wonderful chapter on Astral Deities, which traces the origin of astrological attributions in cuneform texts over 4,000 years old. As this material unfolds in my research, so I am ever amazed at the accuracy of the Church of Light system, which I have been using for almost 40 years. For example, what is the Constellation SERPENS doing in Libra? S.Langdon shows the links between the Goddess and the Serpent - an Ophidian Goddess - not so far from Venus-Aphrodite as one might expect. And many other revelations - all to be processed in due time. Then from the first quarter of this century also comes: Wensinck, A. J., "Tree and Bird as Cosmological Symbols in Western Asia," Verhandelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wet. te Amsterdam, Afd. Letterkunde, Johannes Müller, Amsterdam, 1921. I found a tatty copy in a University Library here - and have scanned the entire text, plus illustrations - and will see when I get to Amsterdam if copyright has lapsed and whether it would be possible to publish this excellent booklet on the Web.
While waiting for this appearance, with baited breath I presume, you can assuage your intellect with these words describing the booklet by Zofia Ameisenowa:
"Wensinck’s book, a very scholarly work based on the investigation of original sources, reveals the close connection between the cosmological Tree of Life and the solar bird (Eagle, Phoenix, Bennu, Simurgh). Wensinck describes the varying topography of the Tree of Life — the Tree of the Centre, of the East, West, South and North, and the Tree as guardian of the Gate of Heaven. He also considers the changing conception of the Tree as Tree of Life, Tree of Paradise, Haoma and Tree of all Seed, Tree of Day and of Night together with the parallel conception of it as the Tree of Hell or of Death in the literary and pictorial traditions of the peoples of the Near East between about 1000 B.C. and 1000 A.D."
This accurate description of Wensinck, is from: Zofia Ameisenowa, The Tree of Life in Jewish iconography, JWCI, Vol. 2, 1939, pp. 326 - 344. Which is in itself an extraordinary journey through Tree Symbolism. At the same time, we have the magnificent 'The Philosophical Tree' by Carl G. Jung; and the equally brilliant 'The Tree of Life' by Roger Cook (Thames and Hudson, London.) Zofia Ameisenowa gives extensive further bibliographical material - and I have yet to update the research by seeing what has been published on the subject over the past six decades.
Also by Wensinck:
Wensinck, A. J. La Pensee de Ghazzali.
Wensinck, A. J. The Muslim Creed: Its Genesis & Historical Development
Wensinck, A. J. Mystic Treatises By Isaac Of Nineveh
All the above has considerable importance to the theme of The Tree in Alchemy.
And so we go onwards, gathering, harvesting - and pressing the juice out of the symbols, to enrichen our inner lives. And, remember, this is all the Work of the Devil! What an inversion!

Excerpts from Women and The Golden Dawn
12th October 1999. Turin, Italy.
Dear Friends,
Thought it might seem that a collective mailing is impersonal - I would like you to know that each and every person on my mailing list is considered a jewel in the net of humanity - and part of my practice is to always run through my mailing list and to send love and light to eveyone on the list as if they were within an immediate and warm human ambience.
I am deeply grateful to those who do respond. I find that after a few years on the Internet, on various mailing lists and Forums, that what becomes very apparent, is that we bring our particular phobias to the Web as well. It is almost as if the biological uncertainties, are reproduced in cyberspace.
And many of these action patterns belong to the Old World. They are attempts to reproduce the Ego-centric Territorial Imperative, within a technological matrix, that by its very nature, has the potential to deconstruct all selfish action patterns. Can you hear what I am saying.
Though we have this extraordinary, historic ability to connect through a Collective Consciousness, a Planetary Mind, all I see is constellations of power trippers, trying to gain control of their particular ponds, and happy, when, as small fish, they make small splashes in their respective ponds.
The World Wide Web, is by its very nature, a manifestation of Chaos. This is its most beguiling feature.
From this fecund mass of data, we have the possibilty of etching new directions of human evolution.
At the moment I am involved in activating some Italian children to their creative potential, and some Young Italian Yuppies, to the possibility that they do have an inner life.
In the meanwhile, I continue to hack my way through the material that I think it is crucial for us to re-phrase. This shifts according to my daily moods. I have no idea of how this dynamic moves - except that it has its own internal logic. My ongoing diary over 25 years, and my Dream Journal - will in time - reveal some sort of pattern. Tonight, I am working on a study of the Pythagorean Basilica in Rome, scanning the few miserable images onto disc, working my way through the Rosarium Images in C.G.Jung's Psychology of The Transference; after having been to an Exhibition Opening of works by my friend Sergio Minero - and then to a wine Bar with other friends and a long talk with psychologist Ugo Fama. I am also scanning and editing notes from the Teachings of Thrangu Rinpoche on Koncho Chidu Guru Rinpoche, at Samye Ling in 1981 - as part of the effort to digitalize my collected archives; and at the moment I am working through the cluster of Minor Constellations around Andromeda, Perseus, Cetus, Pegasus, etc. all in Pisces. At the same time I primed 40 pieces of Fabriano paper with gesso in preparation for some paintings on paper. Last week I went to see Star Wars, which I thought empty of content but very rich in visual creativity. On the morrow I may go and see the last film of Stanley Kubrick, one of my all time hero-figures of the cinema. On Saturday I went to ARTISSIMA - a gigantic Contemporary and Modern Art Fair in the Palazzo Nervi, here in Torino.
Each day brings fresh miracles, new heavens and new hells to explore.
We should never cease to re-invent ourselves. Otherwise, we will fall into the Real Death. The Death of the Psyche. What we are afraid of, as Carlo Suares said, is Life Itself!
This anti-life tendency is entrenched within the structural violence of the media, within the fact that Big Business, ultimately, in thr name of Profit, is prepared to destroy the Earth. Each of us must decide whether we wish to vote for life, or for that kind of living death that is served up by the cynical control freaks of what they think is accepted reality.
These few words are offered as a spontaneous mechanism, to say what needs to be said, which is it itself an ethical duty, a moral obligation, even according to our own personal dictates.
I personally think that in the end, we either wake up collectively, to the dangers present in our civilization, or we perish as individuals. The World Wide Web is a wonderful vehicle for collectivity, whilst at the same time, maintaining the precious fabric of the individual. To this end, I hope to move onwards to a domain i.e. .com - and would like eveyone on this mailing list to participate, in an active manner – to constructing an identity on this new site, when, and if it manifests. In other words, every one on this mailing list is considered a de facto contibutor - and participator.
Feel free, be free. Liberation does not have a price tag.
Love and Peace, Samten

Dear Friends,
After a period of over three weeks on the Ligurian Coast, mainly reading and writing (with pen and paper!) I returned to Turin to a week knocked out by a bad cold. So really the whole of September has passed with very little outward communication. Now that I am back on my feet again, a great deal of work has been accomplished and the Ardere e Versare Workshop starts on Friday 08th October - and will continue every Friday night - through October and November, if all goes well. Thereafter -I may do a bit of travelling for the first weeks of December, or in any event set out for Amsterdam - where I look foreward to a Winter Retreat - courtesy of Tony van der Veen and Chris Hirnet, while they are in South Africa.
Then - I have closed down the Mweb account in South Africa as I have had some difficulty sending payments from Italy to South Africa - and more trouble form the service providers. I have now moved everything to XoOOM.com - and eventually hope to obtain a Domain through this serice provider.
I am also planning to release an entire whack of new material - staring with the full set of 50 cards of the Tarot of Mantegna; a series of images and studies on the Alchemical Androgyne, material on Dionysus, Babylonian susmbolism, and heaven knows what else. My fingers are racing across the keyboards converting everything into .html files.
Plese keep in touch. There are far too many friends who do not acknowledge this newsletter. Let us be kind to one another.
Love and Peace, Samten

This looks like an Interesting Project:
Terence McKenna
Alchemy was not about the transmutation of crude metals into gold, but was a magical art designed to bring the soul to completion.
--Terence McKenna
This film-in-progress from Mystic Fire is a visually rich exploration of a lost world of magic and alchemy set in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, at a time when alchemy reached a feverish pitch of interest in the European imagination.
The story, presented by Terence McKenna, centers on the alchemical/political/religious movements surrounding the
Renaissance magus Dr. John Dee -- mathematician, astrologer and advisor to Queen Elizabeth the First. John Dee laid the ground for an alchemical and magically based society that took root and flourished twenty years later in the marriage of the princess, Elizabeth Stuart of England, to Frederick V, the Palatinate prince of Heidelberg.
The film, shot in England, Heidelberg, and Bohemia; will includes enacted scenes from Dee's diary; as Dee and his skryer Edward Kelley invoke the guidance of angels in seances as they traveled through Northern Europe on Dee's mission to Bohemia -- a little known incident in European history which holds clues to understanding the fate and evolution of modern science and the nature of a lost world of magical and alchemical thinking.

"All things are full of Gods," said Euripides; it is their personal belongings that furnish our world. The event is there—though not in a mirror, for if the mirror vanish the event will still be there. Or better: the event is the mirror self-sustaining its own reflection. Have faith in the everlasting indestructible ground of images. They do not need us."
James Hillman [1]
Dear Friends,
From the 'Mundus Imaginalis' of Henry Corbin, to the Imaginal Alchemy of James Hillman, from the images of 'The Memory Theatre' to the Sacred Tarot, - it is the images which have survived, in some cases, for millenia, not the ideologies. This is what I have come to realize lately, and it is a comfort to say that one knows what direction ones work must take.
I am very grateful to Anderson Bakewell, a recent visitor to Turin with his daughter Petra - for the gift of a book with literally thousands of pictures. It is called "The Hermetic Museum. Alchemy and Mysticism" by Alexander Roob, published by Taschen, 1977. It measures about 14 X 19.5 cm and is almost 14 cms thick - if you do not thrill to its esoteric images you will certainly enter the collective unconsciousness if this book falls on your head. This is an Art Historian's view of Hermetic, Rosicrucian, Masonic and Alchemical symbolism - richly interlaced with images and observations of the work of William Blake and James Joyce. 700 pages of it - with about twice as many illustrations, many of them in colour. Here one views, for the time, images from the Aurora Consurgens, that I have never seen before, a delicious coloured tinted version of the Mutus Liber, and sprinkled everywhere the usual crop of old faithfuls from the Atalanta Fugiens, and Mylius. Illustrations from the Collected Works of Kircher have also been widely used. The text is sparse - and complements the images. To compliment this feast -I have just also read - The Picture of Dorian Grey, by Oscar Wilde, and On the Road by Jack Keroac.
I am doing a bit of travel for the first part of September, to the sea and to see friends - and then serious work will begin. By early December I hope to re-construct a few Web sites - and start a little Online E-Zine, to which you are welcome to contribute.
I am also in the process of building up a small site in Italian - to channel some of the local energies here. Bascially, I have spent the past month in a massive scanning operation - trying to reduce the bulk of my paper archives to digital form. More on that later.
Love and Peace, Samten.

COPENHAVER - Provost, College of Letters and Science and Professor of History, University of California, Los Angeles, Cambridge University Press, 1992. There is a later paperback edition. This descerition is from the Dust Jacket:
"The Hermetica are a body of theological-philosophical texts written in late antiquity, but believed during the Renaissance (when they became well known) to be much older. Their supposed author, a mythical figure called Hermes Trismegistus, was thought to be a contemporary of Moses. The Hermetic philosophy was regarded as an ancient theology, parallel to the revealed wisdom of the Bible, supporting biblical revelation and culminat-ing in the philosophy of Plato, Plotinus and others in the Platonic tradition. This new translation is the only English version based on reliable texts of the Greek Corpus Hermeticum and the Latin Asclepius. Professor Copen-haver's introduction and notes provide a context of interpretation taking into account recent advances in Hermetic scholarship, making this accessible edition an indispensable resource to scholars in ancient philosophy and religion, early Christianity, Renaissance literature and history, the history of science, and the occultist tradition in which the Hermetica have become canonical texts."
