UROBOROS NEWSLETTER - 26th July 2001

Dear Friends,

This comes to you from a very wet, cold and rain drenched Cape Town. Though we have had some clear days and fresh wind to add spice to life! Here is some material on the Web, on Jung, Goddesses, Islamic Mysticism, Yantra, The Western Esoteric Tradition, Art and Culture and so on.

I have just published some old notes on YANTRA - and there is also a page of recent feedback and comments. At the same time, I have been working on the emerging archetype of TITANISM, as manifested through the work of James Hillman and Lopez-Pedraza, to mention a few

WESTERN ESOTERIC TRADITION

I realize that much of the material, especially the Internet addresses of sites containing material concerning the Western Esoteric Tradition, is not everyone's cup of tea. But is part of the work that I love the most - Reviving the Ancient Wisdom. There is an excellent organization in London called R.I.L.K.O. - RESEARCH INTO LOST KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION - which also represents this important activity. In any event, the Knowledge was never 'lost' or 'found'. It merely took on ever-new protean forms. A very valuable document turned up - a translation of the Summary from Martin Plessner's Translation of the Picatrix (The Aim of the Sage) by al-Majriti, Maslamati ibn Ahmad. [I presume - from Martin Plessner's introduction, "Picatrix" Das Ziel des Weisen von Pseudo-Magriti, Translated into German from the Arabic by Hellmut Ritter and Martin Plessner, London, The Warburg Institute, University of London, 1962, pp. lix-lxxv.]

Though it is still difficult to access a complete English translation - here one can get a sense of the contents of this manuscript which had such a great influence on the Hermetic Transmission. I found the document on the Twilit Grotto, Esoteric Archives Site of Joseph H. Peterson. THE URL IS:

Also from Twilit Grotto is:

Theurgia or On the Mysteries of Egypt By Iamblichus

And:

Giovanni Pico della Mirandola: Of Being and Unity

Plus, a real discovery:

MONAS HIEROGLYPHICA - ('THE HIEROGLYPHIC MONAD') by Dr. JOHN DEE, Antwerp, 1564. Translated by J.W. Hamilton-Jones, 1947. Though this is not the presumably definitive translation by Josten, published in AMBIX - it is thanks to Joseph H. Peterson that we have a fully illustrated text of this seminal work in esoteric history. Save it as a Web Page Complete - and that way all the illustrations in the text are maintained. THE URL IS:

NEW POLITICS AND DEMOCRATIC RESPONSES

We have been presented this weekend with further images of protest to the G8 meeting in Genoa, Italy. Many of us are concerned that there is too much mass-control over our lives, especially through the media with its basic cynicism and absorption in images of violence and crime. This crucially effects such issues as the environment, the greenhouse effect, genetic engineering and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction -

OpenDemocracy is a new site which provides articles by well-known contributors on key global issues. More importantly it offers a space for individuals to enter into an informed debate with others about these issues.
Its editor is Anthony Barnett who helped us to draft Charter 99. You can see our influence in its commitment to try and bring the agencies of world government to account, from corporations to the UN. In particular the
current open question asks whether the violence at Seattle, Davos etc is destroying the protest. Interesting contributions have been posted from Charter 99 supporters Naomi Klein and Paul Hirst amongst others.

The site is worth taking a bit of time to find your way about. If it succeeds it will give us a media which takes our concerns seriously and will create a network to deepen the world debate over how to extend democracy on
an international scale. Anthony, I know, wants everyone involved with one world and the global charter to feel that open Democracy is a space where we can exchange our ideas.
